If you have visited The Secret Garden Cafe recently, you may have noticed a few changes.
Nothing dramatic. The same atmosphere. The same favourites. But there is a clear shift in direction, and after two weeks of the new menu being live, it feels like the right time to explain why.
This was not about chasing trends. It was about listening to our customers, understanding what works, and making sure The Secret Garden Cafe continues to move forward in a way that is sustainable, honest, and right for the people who walk through our doors every day.
Listening to What Dorchester Was Asking For
When we first opened in Weymouth, a fully plant-based menu made sense. The demand was there, and it helped shape who we were.
Since moving to Dorchester, things have been different.
We welcome a wide mix of customers every day. Families, couples, dog walkers, workers on lunch breaks, and groups with different dietary needs. What we started to notice was simple. Demand for a fully vegan menu was lower than expected, while requests for more traditional breakfast options were becoming increasingly common.
This was not guesswork. It was based on what sold, what did not, and what customers were asking for. We also saw potential customers walk away when they could not find something as familiar as a traditional breakfast.
At the same time, something else became clear. More and more customers were specifically looking for a gluten-free cafe they could trust.
So the decision became obvious. Adapt to what the local community actually needed, while keeping the values that made The Secret Garden Cafe what it is.
A Stronger Focus on Gluten-Free and Allergen Awareness
One thing that has not changed is our commitment to inclusive food.
Around 95 percent of our menu remains gluten-free, supported by separate fryers, chopping boards, and waffle irons to help reduce cross-contamination. This is built into how the kitchen operates every day, not just added as an afterthought.
It means people with coeliac disease, intolerances, or simply a preference for gluten-free food can order with confidence.
More importantly, it makes visits easier for mixed groups. One person gluten-free, another vegetarian or vegan, another simply after a great breakfast. Everyone can find something they enjoy.
Still Vegan-Friendly. Just Not Veggie/Vegan Only
Vegan options are still very much part of the menu.
A large portion of our dishes remain plant-based or easily adaptable, and that is not going to change. What has changed is the balance.
This reflects a wider shift across the UK hospitality industry, where a number of vegan-only venues have either closed or broadened their menus to reach a wider audience.
For us, this was simply about creating a menu that works for more people, while keeping the inclusive approach that has always been at the heart of The Secret Garden Cafe.
A Sustainable Future for The Secret Garden Cafe
This change was also a business decision.
Running an independent cafe means constantly balancing creativity with sustainability. While we loved the almost fully plant-based model, the reality in Dorchester was that demand simply was not strong enough to support it long term.
We could see it in what sold, what was regularly requested, and what customers were looking for when they walked through the door. A broader, more inclusive menu was clearly needed.
Making this change was not about moving away from our values. It was about ensuring The Secret Garden Cafe continues to grow, support our team, and remain part of the local community.
Two weeks after launching the new menu, the response has been incredibly encouraging. We have welcomed new customers, seen familiar faces return more regularly, and overall sales have increased.
That is a positive sign that this evolution was the right step forward.
A New Breakfast Direction
One of the biggest changes has been the addition of more traditional breakfast options alongside our existing favourites.
This is not entirely new territory for us. Before The Secret Garden Cafe, we ran The Crow’s Nest in the Square in Hope Square, Weymouth. By day, it was a traditional cafe, and by night, a popular tapas restaurant. The Full English breakfast there became particularly well known locally, with many customers and friends still mentioning it today.
That experience has naturally influenced the direction of the new menu.
Over the past two weeks, the response has been incredibly positive, with customers welcoming the wider choice and flexibility. It also allows us to serve mixed groups more easily, whether someone is gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, or simply after a good breakfast.
Our goal is simple. To create an inclusive and enjoyable breakfast experience, and quietly build a reputation for serving one of the best breakfasts in Dorchester.

A Natural Next Step
Running an independent cafe means constantly listening, learning, and adapting.
Costs rise. Customer needs change. And sometimes, the best decision is to evolve rather than stand still.
The new menu reflects exactly that. A wider choice, a stronger gluten-free focus, and a more inclusive approach that works for more people.
After two weeks, the response has been incredibly positive, and we are excited about where this next chapter takes us.
Whether you are visiting for breakfast, lunch, coffee, or something sweet, The Secret Garden Cafe continues to focus on what matters most. Good food, made properly, in a relaxed and welcoming space.
