About The Secret Garden Cafe
A Cafe Designed for Everyone
The Secret Garden Cafe is an independent cafe in Dorchester focused on great breakfasts, relaxed lunches, and a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
We’re known for our inclusive menu, with around 95% of our dishes available gluten-free, alongside vegetarian, vegan, and traditional breakfast options. Whether you’re visiting for coffee and cake, a relaxed brunch, or one of our popular breakfasts, our aim is simple. Great food, served in a comfortable and friendly space.
We’re also proudly dog-friendly, so four-legged visitors are always welcome too.
How The Secret Garden Began
The Secret Garden Cafe didn’t start in Dorchester.
Before opening here, we ran The Crow’s Nest in Hope Square, Weymouth. By day, it operated as a relaxed cafe and bistro. By evening, it became Weymouth’s longest-running and most popular tapas restaurant, welcoming locals and visitors alike.
In early 2019, we began to notice a growing demand for vegan food, with very limited options available locally at the time. It became clear there was an opportunity to create something different. A welcoming cafe that focused on inclusive, plant-based dining, while still appealing to a wide range of customers.
In March 2019, The Secret Garden Cafe first opened its doors in Weymouth.
The response was incredibly positive. What started as a cafe designed to fill a gap in the local market quickly developed into something much bigger, with customers travelling specifically to visit and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and inclusive menu.
That early success helped shape the foundations of what The Secret Garden Cafe has become today.
A New Chapter in Dorchester
In December 2023, The Secret Garden Cafe moved to its new home in Nappers Court, Dorchester.
This marked a major step forward. Our new space is significantly larger, giving us room to expand both our menu and the overall experience. While the setting includes a courtyard and garden, we’re very much an indoor cafe first, with comfortable seating throughout.
January 2024 was spent carefully refurbishing the space. We installed a herringbone tiled floor, hand-built a bespoke bar, and worked hard to preserve the building’s original character. The aim was to create a space that felt warm, relaxed, and a natural fit for The Secret Garden.
Growing Into Something Different
As the cafe grew, so did the menu.
What began as a vegan-focused cafe naturally evolved as we listened to customers and adapted to changing demand. While our roots remain plant-based and inclusive, we have recently expanded the menu to offer more choice while keeping our core values intact.
One thing that has remained consistent is our commitment to inclusivity. Today, around 95% of our menu is available gluten-free, with dedicated preparation methods designed to minimise cross-contamination. Alongside this, we offer vegetarian, vegan, and traditional breakfast options, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Rather than standing still, we’ve always allowed the cafe to develop naturally. Listening to customers, refining the menu, and focusing on what people genuinely enjoy has helped us create a relaxed, welcoming cafe that continues to grow with the community around us.
